We present the results of Hα imaging of a large sample of irregular galaxies. Our sample includes 94 galaxies with morphological classifications of Im, 26 blue compact dwarfs (BCDs), and 20 Sm systems. The sample spans a large range in galactic parameters, including integrated absolute magnitude (MV of -9 to -19), average surface brightness (20–27 mag arcsec-2), current star formation activity (0–1.3 M⊙ yr-1 kpc-2), and relative gas content (0.02–5 M⊙/LB). The Hα images were used to measure the…

A distance-limited sample of 869 objects from the Updated Nearby Galaxy Catalog is used to characterize the star formation status of the Local Volume population. We present a compiled list of 1217

We have studied multi-band surface brightness profiles of a representative sample of 34 nearby dwarf irregular galaxies. Our data include Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) FUV/NUV, UBV, and Hα and

Broadband Imaging of a Large Sample of Irregular Galaxies

We present the results of UBV imaging of a large sample of irregular galaxies: 94 Im systems, 24 blue compact dwarfs (BCDs), and 18 Sm galaxies. We also include JHK imaging of 42 of these galaxies.

The Star Formation Demographics of Galaxies in the Local Volume

We examine the connections between the current global star formation activity, luminosity, dynamical mass, and morphology of galaxies in the Local Volume, using Hα data from the 11 Mpc Hα and

We compare star formation in the inner and outer disks of 11 dwarf irregular galaxies (dIm) within 3.6 Mpc. The regions are identified on Galaxy Evolution Explorer near-UV images, and modeled with

Stellar Populations and the Star Formation Histories of LSB Galaxies—Part I: Optical and Hα Imaging

This paper presents optical and Hα imaging for a large sample of LSB galaxies selected from the PSS-II catalogs (Schombert et al., 1992). As noted in previous work, LSB galaxies span a range of

On the interstellar medium and star formation demographics of galaxies in the local universe

We present a demographic analysis of integrated star formation and gas properties for a sample of galaxies representative of the overall population at z ∼ 0. This research was undertaken in order to

Understanding star formation and feedback in small galaxies

Context. Low-luminosity, active star-forming blue compact galaxies (BCGs) are excellent laboratories for investigating the process of star formation on galactic scales and to probe the interplay

Stellar Populations and the Star Formation Histories of LSB Galaxies: III. Stellar Population Models

Abstract A series of population models are designed to explore the star formation history of gas-rich, low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies. LSB galaxies are unique in having properties of very blue

In order to explore the properties of extreme outer stellar disks, we obtained ultra-deep V and GALEX ultraviolet (UV) images of four dwarf irregular galaxies and one blue compact dwarf galaxy, and

The Evolutionary Status of Isolated Dwarf Irregular Galaxies. II. Star Formation Histories and Gas Depletion

The results of UBV and Hα imaging of a large sample of isolated dwarf irregular galaxies are interpreted in the context of composite stellar population models. The observed optical colors are best

The Rate of star formation in normal disk galaxies

Photometry of the integrated H..cap alpha.. emission in a large sample of field spiral and irregular galaxies has been used to obtain quantitative estimates of the total star formation rate (SFR) in

Star formation properties of UCM galaxies

We present new near-infrared J and K imaging data for 67 galaxies from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid survey used to determine the SFR density of the local universe by Gallego et al. (1995).

Stellar populations in local star-forming galaxies – II. Recent star formation properties and stellar masses

We present the integrated properties of the stellar populations in the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) Survey galaxies. Applying the techniques described in the first paper of this series, we

Star formation properties of Universidad Complutense de Madrid survey galaxies

We present new near-infrared J and K imaging data for 67 galaxies from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) survey used in the determination of the SFR density of the local Universe by Gallego

The Stellar Population and Star Clusters in the Unusual Local Group Galaxy IC 10

We present an analysis of Hubble Space Telescope U, V, I, and Hα images of the peculiar Local Group irregular galaxy IC 10. The images are used to determine the nature of the stellar products in a

The Hα Galaxy Survey ⋆ I. The galaxy sample, Hα narrow-band observations and star formation parameters for 334 galaxies

We discuss the selection and observations of a large sample of nearby galaxies, which we are using to quantify the star formation activity in the local Universe. The sample consists of 334 galaxies

Star Formation Rates of Local Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies. I. 1.4 GHz and 60 Micron Luminosities

We determine and examine the star formation rates of 50 well-known, local blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies based on their 1.4 GHz and 60 μm luminosities. We find that in cases for which both radio

The Star Formation History of NGC 6822

Images of five fields in the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope in the F555W and F814W filters are presented. Three of the fields lie mostly within

Gas-rich Dwarf Galaxies from the Second Palomar Sky Survey. II. Optical Properties

We describe the optical properties of a sample of 101 gas-rich field dwarf galaxies found on Second Palomar Sky Survey plates, most newly discovered as part of a survey to investigate the clustering
