In this tutorial paper we summarize how the star formation (SF) history of a galactic region can be derived from the colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) of its resolved stars. The procedures to build synthetic CMDs and to exploit them to derive the SF histories (SFHs) are described, as well as the corresponding uncertainties. The SFHs of resolved dwarf galaxies of all morphological types, obtained from the application of the synthetic CMD method, are reviewed and discussed. To summarize: (1) only… Expand
A close look at the Centaurus A group of galaxies III. Recent star formation histories of late-type dwarfs around M83
We study the resolved stellar populations of dwarf galaxies in the nearby Centaurus A/M83 group of galaxies. Our goal is to characterize their evolutionary history and to investigate eventualExpand
SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION AND EVOLUTION OF THE STELLAR POPULATIONS AND CANDIDATE STAR CLUSTERS IN THE BLUE COMPACT DWARF I ZWICKY 18
The evolutionary properties and spatial distribution of I Zwicky 18 (IZw18) stellar populations are analyzed by means of Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys deep and accurateExpand
VARIABILITY AND STAR FORMATION IN LEO T, THE LOWEST LUMINOSITY STAR-FORMING GALAXY KNOWN TODAY*
We present results from the first combined study of variable stars and star formation history (SFH) of the Milky Way 'ultra-faint' dwarf (UFD) galaxy Leo T, based on F606W and F814W multi-epochExpand
The star formation history of the Sculptor dwarf irregular galaxy
Aims. We study the resolved stellar populations and derive the star formation history of the SDIG, a gas-rich dwarf galaxy member of the NGC7793 subgroup in the Sculptor group of galaxies. Methods.Expand
VLT/FLAMES spectroscopy of Red Giant Branch stars in the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy
The ages of individual Red Giant Branch stars (RGB) can range from 1 Gyr old to the age of the Universe, and it is believed that the abundances of most chemical elements in their photospheres remainExpand

Abstract Galaxies cover a wide range of masses and star formation histories. In this review, I summarize some of the evolutionary key features of common galaxy types. At the high-mass end, veryExpand
Uncovering the birth of the Milky Way through accurate stellar ages with Gaia
Knowledge of the ages of the stars formed over a galaxy’s lifetime is fundamental to an understanding of its formation and evolution. However, stellar ages are difficult to obtain since they cannotExpand
Star Formation Histories of the LEGUS dwarf galaxies. II. Spatially resolved star formation history of the Magellanic irregular NGC 4449.
We present a detailed study of the Magellanic irregular galaxy NGC 4449 based on both archival and new photometric data from the Legacy Extragalactic UV Survey, obtained with the Hubble SpaceExpand
Integrated-light analyses vs. colour-magnitude diagrams
Context. Most of our knowledge of the stellar component of galaxies is based on the analysis of distant systems and comes from integrated light data. It is important to test whether the results ofExpand
A close look at the Centaurus A group of galaxies - IV. Recent star formation histories of late-type dwarfs around CenA
Aims. We study the resolved stellar populations of dwarf galaxies in the nearby Centaurus A/M 83 group of galaxies. Our goal is to characterize their evolutionary history and to investigate eventualExpand

Abstract The colour-magnitude diagrams of resolved stellar populations are the best tool to study the star formation histories of the host galactic regions. In this review the method to derive starExpand
Star formation histories of local group dwarf galaxies
We present the study of the star formation histories (SFHs) of a sample of Local Group dwarf galaxies (LGDGs), via the analysis and modelling, with the means of an evolutionary stellar populationExpand
Star-Formation Histories, Abundances, and Kinematics of Dwarf Galaxies in the Local Group
Within the Local Universe galaxies can be studied in great detail star by star, and here we review the results of quantitative studies in nearby dwarf galaxies. The color-magnitude diagram synthesisExpand
THE RECENT STAR FORMATION HISTORIES OF M81 GROUP DWARF IRREGULAR GALAXIES
We present observations and analysis of nine dwarf irregular galaxies (dIs) in the M81 Group taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The nine galaxies (theExpand
The Stellar Content and the Star Formation History of the Local Group Dwarf Galaxy LGS 3
The star formation history (SFH) and the properties of the dwarf galaxy LGS3 are analyzed using color-magnitude (CM) diagrams plotted from VRI photometry of 736 stars. The distance to the galaxy isExpand
Star Formation Histories of Local Group Dwarf Galaxies
40 galaxies are currently known as, or suspected to be Local Group members within a radius of 1.8 Mpc. 37 of these galaxies are dwarf galaxies with M_B > -18.5 mag. I present a compilation of theExpand
Non-parametric star formation histories for four dwarf spheroidal galaxies of the Local Group
We use recent Hubble Space Telescope colour–magnitude diagrams of the resolved stellar populations of a sample of local dSph galaxies (Carina, Leo I, Leo II and Ursa Minor) to infer the starExpand
Recovering the ages and metallicities of stars of a complex stellar population system
Abstract We present a new method to solve for the star-formation history (SFH) of a complex stellar population system from the analysis of the color-magnitude diagram (CMD). The SFH is obtained inExpand
