Stanley Smith Cook was born at Canterbury on 25 January 1875, and was the second of three sons of William Henry Cook and his wife, Martha Marsh Smith, both well-known residents of Canterbury. As a boy he was educated, primarily, at a Church School in Canterbury, and in 1889, at the age of fourteen and three-quarters, proved his ability by winning in competition a scholarship which enabled him to enter the King’s School of that city.
