Studies have demonstrated the effects of complex environment (EC) housing on brain plasticity both during postnatal development and in adulthood, but it is not clear how long these plastic changes persist nor what happens when environmental exposure is discontinued. Here we examined layer IV in the visual cortex of adult male rats for the: (1) effects of EC housing on synaptic plasticity, and (2) persistence of the synaptic changes after withdrawal from the complex environment. Fifty-eight…
Behaviorally induced synaptogenesis and dendritic growth in the hippocampal region following transient global cerebral ischemia are accompanied by improvement in spatial learning
TLDR
The results showed that ischemic injury and EC housing were able to independently influence synaptogenesis and dendritic growth in the hippocampal area adjacent to the site of injury, and that EC housing-induced synaptic anddendritic changes were accompanied by enhanced functional recovery after transient global cerebral ischemia.
Environmental Enrichment Induces Synaptic Structural Modification After Transient Focal Cerebral Ischemia in Rats
TLDR
The data suggest that improved spatial memory of cerebral ischemic rats by EE is associated with structural modifications of synaptic junctions in several brain regions.
Experience induces structural and biochemical changes in the adult primate brain.
TLDR
The results show that the structure of the adult primate brain remains highly sensitive even to modest levels of experiential complexity and may induce reversible dendritic spine and synapse decreases in brain regions important for cognition.
Myelination of the corpus callosum in male and female rats following complex environment housing during adulthood
TLDR
The sensitivity of myelination to experience is reduced in adulthood relative to development in both sexes, and the inability of two months of complex environment housing during adulthood to impact the number ofMyelinated axons in the splenium was confirmed.
Experience-dependent plasticity in early stations of sensory processing in mature brains: effects of environmental enrichment on dendrite measures in trigeminal nuclei.
TLDR
A ubiquity of experience-dependent changes should not be overlooked when interpreting neuroplasticity and developing plasticity-based therapeutic strategies, as these changes evolved when animals were returned to standard housing for an additional 2 months.
Motor learning induces astrocytic hypertrophy in the cerebellar cortex
TLDR
It is demonstrated that learning triggers the hypertrophy of astrocytic processes and furthermore that, unlike learning-induced synaptogenesis, astroCytic growth is reduced in the absence of continued training.
Environmental enrichment and the sensory brain: the role of enrichment in remediating brain injury
TLDR
The role of EE in the treatment of experimental TBI is addressed, where the demonstrated sensorimotor and cognitive benefits associated with exposure to EE, and their possible mechanisms are discussed.
Effects of exercise training on dendritic morphology in the cardiorespiratory and locomotor centers of the mature rat brain.
TLDR
The adult rat brain remains dynamic and adapts to chronic ET, however, some brain areas appear to be more affected if ET is initiated in early postnatal development.

Plasticity of GFAP-immunoreactive astrocyte size and number in visual cortex of rats reared in complex environments
TLDR
Examination of the effects of rearing for 10, 30 or 67 days in a complex, social or individual cage environment upon glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) immunoreactive astrocytes of the occipital cortex found EC rats exposed to their environment for 30 days or longer had a greater surface density ofAstrocytic processes (Sv) than SC or IC rats.
Persistence of visual cortex dendritic alterations induced by postweaning exposure to a "superenriched" environment in rats.
TLDR
In a factorial analysis of initial experience condition by age of subject, the consistent presence of experience effects combined with the relatively rare appearance of either age effects or interactions indicated that the dominant result was for the dendritic effects of the initial superenriched environment exposure to persist through the subsequent period of individual housing.
Induction of Multiple Synapses by Experience in the Visual Cortex of Adult Rats
TLDR
Apparent tendency to reutilize presynaptic processes may indicate a constraint upon the formation of neural circuitry and a fundamental form of plastic synaptic change in adult rats following 60 days of housing in standard laboratory cages or in complex environments.
Plasticity in adult rat visual cortex: an examination of several cell populations after differential rearing.
TLDR
It is demonstrated that adult visual cortex neurons do change after exposure to differential environments, but that changes are not seen in every cell population.
Effects of complex or isolated environments on cortical dendrites of middle-aged rats
TLDR
This report is the first to describe substantial dendritic alterations subsequent to differential housing in middle-aged rats, and suggests that experience may affect neuronal structure over much of an animal's lifespan.
Capillary and mitochondrial support of neural plasticity in adult rat visual cortex
TLDR
The results indicate that young adult rats can generate new capillaries and mitochondria in response to increased metabolic demands, but in a less vigorous fashion than in previously described weanling animals.
Enriched environment increases neurogenesis in the adult rat dentate gyrus and improves spatial memory.
TLDR
It is shown that adult rats housed in an enriched environment show improved performance in a spatial learning test, suggesting that environmental cues can enhance neurogenesis in the adult hippocampal region, which is associated with improved spatial memory.
Effects of rearing complexity on dendritic branching in frontolateral and temporal cortex of the rat.
TLDR
The effects of environmental complexity on dendritic branching are not restricted to those previously seen in visual cortex, and both the non-universality of the effects and the relative concordance within litters suggest that equivalent neuronal populations are stained in the different environmental groups.
Effects of differential environments on the cerebral anatomy of rats as a function of previous and subsequent housing conditions
TLDR
The gross cerebral alterations associated with differential housing did not differ significantly after 2 as opposed to 1 month's exposure, but the effects on neuronal density and the ratio of oligodendrocytes to neurons in layers V and VI of the cortex were, paradoxically, significantly smaller with the longer duration.
Therapeutic motor training increases parallel fiber synapse number per Purkinje neuron in cerebellar cortex of rats given postnatal binge alcohol exposure: preliminary report.
TLDR
It is demonstrated that rehabilitative intervention (complex motor training) can improve motor performance impaired by postnatal alcohol exposure and that surviving Purkinje neurons retain the capacity for synaptic plasticity.
