The aetiological agent of SVC is spring viraemia of carp virus (SVCV), a member of the virus family Rhabdoviridae, and tentatively placed in the genus Vesiculovirus (21). The virus genome is a nonsegmented, negative-sense, single strand of RNA. The genome contains 11,019 nucleotides encoding five proteins in the following order: a nucleoprotein (N), a phosphoprotein (P), a matrix protein (M), a glycoprotein (G) and an RNA-dependent, RNA polymerase (L).
