The round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) was first noticed in the Gulf of Gdansk in 1990. This Ponto-Caspian fish was most likely introduced to the Baltic environment from ships’ ballast water. During the first years of invasion, slow population growth was observed in the initially colonized regions. From 1994, round goby gradually spread in all shallow water zones of the Gulf of Gdansk. The area occupied by the population and the number of fish grew rapidly. By the end of the nineties, round…

Investigation of the population characteristics of the round goby in the eastern GoF to better understand its expansion trend and whether it will become abundant enough to be exploited by the local fishery suggests that the roundGoby has successfully colonized this region of the Baltic Sea.
Expansion, Feeding and Parasites of the Round Goby, Neogobius melanostomus (Pallas, 1811), a recent invader in the Curonian Lagoon, Lithuania
- Environmental Science
- 2008
The quantitative food content analysis in the northern part of the Curonian Lagoon suggests that during their first year of life N. melanostomus juveniles rely on chironomid larvae, ostracods and amphipods, while beginning with the second year oflife, mussels, zebra mussels in particular, constitute over a half of their diet.
Has the invasive round goby caused new links in Baltic food webs?
- Environmental ScienceEnvironmental Biology of Fishes

Stomach analysis, trophic level estimates, and stable isotope analyses all indicated that cod and perch in Gulf of Gdańsk after the round goby establishment belonged to a similar trophics level, suggesting that round gobies constitute a new energetic pathway from mussels to top predators.

A modified food preference index (mE) is proposed, taking into account four important parameters and combining benefits of two commonly applied indices, for the Ponto-Caspian round goby, which is a prominent invasive species in many European waters.

Abstract— The round goby is a small demersal fish that is considered one of the top invasive fish species. Having settled far beyond its native Ponto–Caspian region, the round goby currently inhabits…

In September 2013, the non-native round goby Neogobius melanostomus was found for the first time in the River Oder, Germany, about 58 km upstream of the Szczecin Lagoon (Zalew Szczeminski) during the regular fish monitoring program for the Water Framework Directive.
The colonization of the invasive round goby Neogobius melanostomus by parasites in new localities in the southwestern Baltic Sea

- 2011
The round goby Neogobius melanostomus is a bottom-dwelling fish native for the Ponto-Caspian basin, which started to colonize the Baltic Sea since 1991, and the processes of colonization have the same tendency as in the Gulf of Gdańsk.
Pelagic occurrence and diet of invasive round goby Neogobius melanostomus (Actinopterygii, Gobiidae) juveniles in deep well-mixed European reservoirs

This study documents the first evidence of the pelagic occurrence and feeding of round goby juveniles, and confirms the importance of pelagic habitats for early stages of this invasive species in European lentic systems.

The species accumulation curves show stable accumulation of parasite species by all four fish hosts along the studied part of the corridor, from the Dnieper Estuary to the Vistula River delta, and reveals that the studied gobies lose the parasites common in the host native range and accept new parasites from the colonized area.

The round goby, Neogobius melanostomus (Pallas, 1814), is one of the most invasive non-indigenous species in the Baltic Sea. It dominates coastal fisheries in some localities and is frequently found…
