OBJECTIVES The effect of photoperiod or melatonin treatments on ovarian adenocarcinoma in turkey breeder hens (Meleagris gallopavo) was investigated to evaluate the usefulness of this animal as a model for studying ovarian cancer. METHODS In Experiment 1, photoperiod effects were tested by exposing turkeys with ovarian tumors to 8 wks of short days (8:16LD) followed by a 12 wk period of long days (16:8LD). In Experiment 2, exogenous melatonin was administered to turkeys during long day… Expand
The Restricted Ovulator Chicken: A Unique Animal Model for Investigating the Etiology of Ovarian Cancer
TLDR
It is strongly suggested that the number of ovulatory events is directly related to the incidence of OC in chickens because there was no difference in ovulation rate between WT hens with and without OC. Expand
Microscopic Morphology and Apoptosis of Ovarian Tissue after Cryopreservation using a Vitrification Method in Post-Hatching Turkey Poults, Meleagris gallopavo
TLDR
It is concluded that 3 days of age appears optimal for recovery of donor ovaries for cryopreservation, taking the advance of reduced cryoinjury and ease of tissue handling at this age. Expand
Post-hatching development of the turkey pineal organ: histological and immunohistochemical studies.
TLDR
During the investigated period of life, the pineal increased in size due to creation of new follicles, enlargement of the follicles and development of the stroma, and the rudimentary-receptor and secretory pinealocytes were demonstrated based on HIOMT-immunoreactivity. Expand
Ovarian Cancer and the Environment: Rodent Models
TLDR
This article summarizes the wide range of spontaneous, experimentally derived, and genetically modified rodent models of ovarian tumors to better reflect the potential for epithelial ovarian cancers to originate in the ovarian or fallopian tube (oviductal) epithelium. Expand
Urinary melatonin and risk of ovarian cancer
TLDR
These results are consistent with the previous study in which it was reported no association between night shift work and ovarian cancer; however, given the small sample size in this study, additional evaluation in larger studies is warranted. Expand
Nightshift work and risk of ovarian cancer
TLDR
Evidence suggesting an association between shift work and ovarian cancer is found is found, and there was suggestive evidence of a decreased risk of ovarian cancer among women reporting a preference for activity during evenings rather than mornings. Expand
Diurnal and circadian rhythms in melatonin synthesis in the turkey pineal gland and retina.
TLDR
Melatonin rhythmicity in the turkey pineal gland and retina is regulated both by light and the endogenous circadian clock, and the rapid dampening of the rhythms under DD suggests that of these two regulatory factors, environmental light may be the primary stimulus in the maintenance of the high amplitude melatonin rhythms in the Turkey. Onco-epidemiology of domestic animals and targeted therapeutic attempts: perspectives on human oncology
The spontaneous tumor biology has been investigated with the support of animalists using animals as a preclinical model allowing translation of results in clinical practice. This review provides anExpand
What Is Your Diagnosis?
TLDR
Because of the bird’s severe respiratory distress, advanced age, poor prognosis, and emaciated condition, euthanasia was elected. Expand
Ovarian Cancer: Lifestyle, Diet and Nutrition
TLDR
Lifestyle, dietary and nutrition interventions may prevent and improve survival of ovarian cancer patients and inadequate clarity and gaps exists within the literature, eg. Expand

A pilot study of ovarian cancer chemoprevention using medroxyprogesterone acetate in an avian model of spontaneous ovarian carcinogenesis.
TLDR
The high rate of reproductive tract adenocarcinoma observed in this study supports the avian hen as a valid model of spontaneous ovarian carcinogenesis in which to test chemoprevention strategies and provides a unique opportunity for investigating the pathogenesis of ovarian carcinoma. Expand
Immune function in turkey breeder hens during the short day prelighting period and renewal of photosensitivity for egg production.
TLDR
It is concluded that recycling of PR turkey hens was associated with altered cellular and humoral immune responses characterized by initial decline then recovery in both the light restriction and the postphotostimulation periods. Expand
Melatonin inhibition and pinealectomy enhancement of 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene-induced mammary tumors in the rat.
TLDR
The hypothesis that melatonin inhibits the development of DMBA-induced mammary tumors in the rat while removal of the pineal gland stimulates development of such tumors is supported. Expand
Effect of melatonin supplementation on the ontogeny of immunity in the Large White turkey poult.
TLDR
Melatonin administration accelerated the development of cell-mediated (PHA-P-induced CBH reaction) and humoral (CRBC-induced antibody titer) immune responses, and these responses were elevated above controls through 21 d posthatch. Expand
Photoperiod influences the growth of colon cancer in mice.
TLDR
Investigation of whether shorter (6L:18D) or longer (18L:6D) photoperiods alter tumor growth found significantly greater tumor area, weight, and group mortality were found in mice exposed to 12L:12D photoperperiods, and difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) was a more effective inhibitor of tumor growth under the 6L: 18D phot Operators. Expand
Ovarian tumors of the hen.
TLDR
It is apparent that hens have a high rate of ovarian tumors, but that such tumors are uncommon in hens less than 2 years of age, and that Hormonal imbalance does not appear to be a factor in the development of these adenocarcinomas. Expand
Reversal by melatonin of the effect of pinealectomy on tumor growth.
TLDR
The effect of pinealectomy on tumor growth is due to a deficiency in endogenous melatonin, which is known to cause accelerated growth of transplanted melanoma in hamsters. Expand

Effects of lighting conditions and melatonin supplementation on the cellular and humoral immune responses in Japanese quail Coturnix coturnix japonica.
TLDR
It was clear that quail placed in daily light-dark cycles (LD), possessing a diurnal rhythm of melatonin, had significantly elevated immune responses as compared to those birds in LL, and melatonin supplemented to birds exposed to LL was immuno-enhancing. Expand
