Much has been written on the Tolstoy Farm. Few essays, however, have examined it within the context of the relationship Mohandas K. Gandhi (1869-1948) cultivated with his German-Jewish South African friend, Hermann Haim Kallenbach (1871-1945).1 It is important to know Gandhi through somebody who was so closely associated with him.
