An experimental arthritis, induced by injection of the knee joint with kaolin and carrageenan, results in guarding of and decreased weight bearing on the limb. At the time of injection, a transient increased release of all amino acids examined is measurable in samples collected by microdialysis. A second and prolonged increase of aspartate (ASP), glutamate (GLU), and glutamine (GLN) concentrations follows after 3 h.
