Central nervous system maldevelopment can have different presentations in twins. We report on a case of different presentations of spina bifida occulta in monozygotic twins. The first twin presented at birth with a lipomyelomeningocele; a tethered cord was diagnosed in the second twin at 2 years of age. Neural tube defects (NTDs) are a group of common congenital malformations of the brain and spine generated during neurulation. The genetic basis of this process is still not well known. Whenever…
Rare case of spina bifida in both twins with possible genetic basis
TLDR
A case of dichorionic diamniotic twin pregnancy with spina bifida in both fetuses concordantly is presented and it is shown that genes involved in the pathogenesis of these malformations are unknown.
Spinal dysraphism at the Syrian Neolithic site of Dja’de el-Mughara
Spina bifida is a neurulation defect that results in an incomplete closing of the backbone, as well as membranes surrounding the spinal cord. Several archaeological cases of spina bifida have been
Prenatal Diagnosis of Neural Tube Defects
To the Editor.— I was surprised to read in the report by Macri et al (236:1251, 1976) that they were aware of no prospectively prenatally diagnosed cases of open neural tube defects. Their report

Familial lipomyelomeningocele: A further report
TLDR
The possibility of an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance with implications for genetic counselling is raised on 2 affected siblings with similar lesions and it is raised that the condition may be polygenic.
EARLY PRENATAL DIAGNOSIS OF FAMILIAL LIPOMYELOMENINGOCELE
TLDR
This case emphasizes that reproductive counseling after the birth of an infant with a rare malformation must always include the possibility of recurrence and early diagnosis and resection of this often harmless-appearing, rare teratomatous tumor of the spinal cord is necessary to prevent irreversible neurologic damage during childhood.
Recurrence risks for neural tube defects in siblings of patients with lipomyelomeningocele
TLDR
The sample size is small, but data suggest the underlying genetic basis for closed defects may be the same or closely related to that for myelomeningocele in some families, although a larger sample will be necessary before these data are appropriate for use in a clinical setting.
A familial association between twinning and upper-neural tube defects.
TLDR
These findings, if corroborated, may imply an etiology common to twinning and NTDs and can perhaps be applied in counseling NTD families.
Prenatal diagnosis of lipomyelomeningocele.
TLDR
An unusual case of a lipomyelomeningocele with tethered cord, which was diagnosed on prenatal ultrasonography, showed the posterior fossa to be normal and the abnormality was identified only upon imaging of the lumbosacral spine.
Precurrence risk of neural tube defects in siblings of infants with lipomyelomeningocele
TLDR
The data from the Hawaii Birth Defects Program would tend to support the suggestion in the previous investigation that the underlying genetic factors for lipomyelomeningocele and open NTDs may be similar.
Neural tube defects among twin births.
TLDR
This study conducted a population-based study that included live births and fetal deaths in Los Angeles County, California, ascertaining cases by multiple methods to support proposed etiologic theories associating NTDs with females or monozygotic twins, or both.
Epidemiology of Neural Tube Defects
TLDR
Recurrence risk is markedly higher than the risk for a first NTD‐affected pregnancy in the general population, and there is strong evidence, overall, for a protective effect of adequate folate consumption, but in some high‐risk groups, such as women taking AEDs, folate supplementation has not been proven to reduce NTD risk.
International study of sex ratio and twinning of neural tube defects.
TLDR
Sex and twinning of affected infants and fetuses, according to type of neural tube defect (NTD), varied by type of NTD, vital status at birth, presence of associated malformations, and year of birth, with an increasing sex ratio for anencephaly during the 1960s and 1970s.
Testing for genetic associations with the PAX gene family in a spina bifida population.
TLDR
Multiple variations were detected in each of the PAX genes with significant TDT results; however, these variations were not passed from parent to child in phase with the positively transmitted allele, therefore, it is unlikely that these variations contribute to susceptibility for SB, but rather are previously unreported polymorphisms.
