Energetic causal sets are causal sets endowed by a flow of energy-momentum between causally related events. These incorporate a novel mechanism for the emergence of space-time from causal relations. Here we construct a spin foam model which is also an energetic causal set model. This model is closely related to the model introduced in parallel by Wolfgang Wieland in arXiv:1407.0025, and this construction makes use of results used there. What makes a spin foam model also an energetic causal set…

Realism and causality. II. Retrocausality in energetic causal sets

We describe a new form of retrocausality, which is found in the behaviour of a class of causal set theories, called energetic causal sets (ECS). These are discrete sets of events, connected by causal

Causal structure in spin-foams

The metric field of general relativity is almost fully determined by its causal structure. Yet, in spinfoam models for quantum gravity, the role played by the causal structure is still largely

Views, variety and celestial spheres

This paper describes a continuation of the program of causal views, in which the world consists of nothing but a vast number of partial views of its past. Each view is associated to an event, and is

Causal spin foams

I discuss how to impose causality on spin-foam models, separating forward and backward propagation, turning a given triangulation to a 'causal set', and giving asymptotically the exponential of the

Thermodynamics of quantum spacetime histories

We show that the simplicity constraints, which define the dynamics of spin foam models, imply, and are implied by, the first law of thermodynamics, when the latter is applied to causal diamonds in

The Dynamics of Difference

A proposal is made for a fundamental theory, in which the history of the universe is constituted of diverse views of itself. Views are attributes of events, and the theory’s only be-ables; they

The Dynamics of Difference

A proposal is made for a fundamental theory, in which the history of the universe is constituted of diverse views of itself. Views are attributes of events, and the theory’s only be-ables; they

Views, variety and quantum mechanics

A non-local hidden variables theory for non-relativisitic quantum theory is presented, which gives a realist completion of quantum mechanics, in the sense of a complete description of individual

A new action for simplicial gravity in four dimensions

We develop a proposal for a theory of simplicial gravity with spinors as the fundamental configuration variables. The underlying action describes a mechanical system with finitely many degrees of

A Universe that Does Not Know the Time

In this paper, we propose that cosmological time is a quantum observable that does not commute with other quantum operators essential for the definition of cosmological states, notably the

The universe as a process of unique events

This work introduces a new kind of deterministic dynamics for a causal set in which new events are generated from pairs of progenitor events by a rule which is based on extremizing the distinctions between causal past sets of events.

On the causal Barrett--Crane model: measure, coupling constant, Wick rotation, symmetries and observables

We discuss various features and details of two versions of the Barrett-Crane spin foam model of quantum gravity: first of the Spin(4)-symmetric Riemannian model and second of the $SL(2,C)$-symmetric

Quantum energetic causal sets

We propose an approach to quantum theory based on the energetic causal sets, introduced in [1]. Fundamental processes are causal sets whose events carry momentum and energy, which are transmitted

Dual formulation of spin network evolution

We illustrate the relationship between spin networks and their dual representation by labelled triangulations of space in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions. We apply this to the recent proposal for causal

Hamiltonian spinfoam gravity

This paper presents a Hamiltonian formulation of spinfoam gravity, which leads to a straightforward canonical quantization. To begin with, we derive a continuum action adapted to a simplicial

A discrete, unitary, causal theory of quantum gravity

A discrete model of Lorentzian quantum gravity is proposed. The theory is completely background free, containing no reference to absolute space, time, or simultaneity. The states at one slice of time
