In a previous radiographic study of 4 deaf women, some aberrant features in vocal tract configuration were identified for vowels produced with excessive pharyngeal resonance. These features included neutralization of tongue position, elevation of the hyoid, and a retraction of the tongue, associated with a deflection of the epiglottis in the lower pharynx.
