This article introduces a granular synthesis algorithm in which grains of sound are processed in the frequency domain and combined at spectral level. In particular, each grain contributes to the sound synthesis with its magnitude spectrum only. Phase is reconstructed using spectrogram inversion techniques which support real-time computation. With this method, windowing and overlapping grains of regular size is no longer required. The algorithm presents a large number of parameters available for…

Real-Time Granular Synthesis with a Digital Signal Processor
TLDR
Curtis Roads (1978, 1985) has proposed granular synthesis as a unique method of achieving complex sounds by the generation of high densities of small grains on the order of magnitude of 10-20 msec duration.
MORPHING OF GRANULAR SOUNDS
Granular sounds are commonly used in video games but the conventional approach of using recorded samples does not allow sound designers to modify these sounds. In this paper we present a technique to
Granular Analysis/Synthesis for Simple and Robust Transformations of Complex Sounds
TLDR
A novel and user-friendly granular analysis/synthesis system particularly geared towards environmental sounds is presented and would feature flexible time modification with which the user could re-assign the timing of grains and adjust the time-scale.
Single Pass Spectrogram Inversion
TLDR
The Single-Pass Spectrogram Inversion (SPSI) algorithm is similar to the synthesis step in phaselocked vocoders, but with phase rates at spectral peaks determined solely from the magnitude spectra using quadratic interpolation.
The Wavelet Transform for Analysis, Synthesis, and Processing of Speech and Music Sounds
TLDR
The wavelet transform is a recent method of signal analysis and synthesis that analyzes signals in terms of wavelets-functions limited both in the time and the frequency domain in comparison to the classical Fourier analysis method.
Concatenative sound synthesis: The early years
TLDR
A comparative survey and taxonomy of the many different approaches to concatenative synthesis throughout the history of electronic music, starting in the 1950s, up to the recent surge of contemporary methods.
A SYSTEM FOR DATA-DRIVEN CONCATENATIVE SOUND SYNTHESIS
TLDR
The CATERPILLAR software system has been developed to allow data-driven concatenative unit selection sound synthesis, which allows high-quality instrument synthesis with high level control, explorative free synthesis from arbitrary sound databases, or resynthesis of a recording with sounds from the database.
REAL-TIME SPECTROGRAM INVERSION USING PHASE GRADIENT HEAP INTEGRATION
TLDR
A real-time spectrogram inversion algorithm based on the relationship of the gradients of the phase and the logarithm of the magnitude and on the gradient integration theorem is proposed.
Particle synthesis – a unified model for granular synthesis
TLDR
An implementation of a synthesis module capable of performing all known types of time based granular synthesis and all its variations is described, to facilitate interpolation between the known varieties of particle synthesis.
Signal reconstruction from the short-time Fourier transform magnitude
This paper presents various conditions that are sufficient for reconstructing a discrete-time signal from samples of its short-time Fourier transform magnitude. For applications such as speech
