To determine whether the specificity of lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) influences the susceptibility to atherosclerosis, we compared the composition and in vitro synthesis of cholesteryl ester (CE) in the plasmas of 14 vertebrate species with varying predisposition to atherosclerosis.
