Abstract A new method is described for the estimation of l -histidine in biological fluids. It depends upon the spectrophotometric determination of urocanate formed from histidine by histidine ammonia-lyase (histidase). The method is specific for l -histidine and is not affected by the presence of the d -isomer, phenylalanine, or histidine derivatives such as 1-methylhistidine, 3-methylhistidine, formiminoglutamate, imidazole lactate, and imidazole pyruvate.
