Species diversity and biological invasions: relating local process to community pattern.
@article{Levine2000SpeciesDA, title={Species diversity and biological invasions: relating local process to community pattern.}, author={Jonathan M. Levine}, journal={Science}, year={2000}, volume={288 5467}, pages={ 852-4 } }
In a California riparian system, the most diverse natural assemblages are the most invaded by exotic plants. A direct in situ manipulation of local diversity and a seed addition experiment showed that these patterns emerge despite the intrinsic negative effects of diversity on invasions. The results suggest that species loss at small scales may reduce invasion resistance. At community-wide scales, the overwhelming effects of ecological factors spatially covarying with diversity, such as…

Invasion impacts local species turnover in a successional system
- Environmental Science

Declines in species richness associated with L. japonica invasion resulted from effects on local colonization rates only and not through the competitive displacement of established species, suggesting that some species are more susceptible to invasion than others.
Scale‐dependent relationships between native richness, resource stability and exotic cover in dock fouling communities of Washington, USA
- Environmental Science
- 2009
Within local neighbourhoods, native diversity may inhibit exotic abundance, but the mechanism is unlikely related to resource limitation, and at the largest scale, correlations suggest that native richness is higher in cooler environments, whereas exotic richness isHigher in warmer environments.
Native communities determine the identity of exotic invaders even at scales at which communities are unsaturated
- Environmental Science
- 2010
Native communities determine the identity of exotic invaders even at large spatial scales where communities are unsaturated, suggesting that in the transition from small to large scales, biotic resistance is relaxed but still present.

We propose that the relationship between diversity and community invasibility depends on the degree to which community composition is driven by immigration processes. When immigration is enhanced by…

Contrary to predictions from neutral theory, these results indicate that niche overlap was an important component of biotic resistance in these experimental plant communities and summed up to significant effects of species richness.
Rare Species Loss Alters Ecosystem Function – Invasion Resistance

It is found that exotic species establishment was higher in plots in which diversity was successfully reduced by removal treatments and was inversely related to imposed species richness.
The relationship between community diversity and exotic plants: cause or consequence of invasion?
- Environmental Science
- 2005
The conceptual framework provides a structure to synthesize the current body of research, suggests research needed to fill the gaps in understanding and to organize results from future research, and is a powerful tool to guide ecological understanding of the relationship between invasion and diversity across systems, species, and scales.
Biodiversity as a barrier to ecological invasion
- Environmental ScienceNature
- 2002
It is shown that species diversity in small experimental grassland plots enhances invasion resistance by increasing crowding and species richness in localized plant neighbourhoods, and suggests that local biodiversity represents an important line of defence against the spread of invaders.
ECOLOGICAL RESISTANCE TO BIOLOGICAL INVASION OVERWHELMED BY PROPAGULE PRESSURE
- Environmental Science

This is the first experimental study to demonstrate the primacy of propagule pressure as a determinant of habitat invasibility in comparison with other candidate controlling factors.
WEAK VS. STRONG INVADERS OF NATURAL PLANT COMMUNITIES: ASSESSING INVASIBILITY AND IMPACT
- Environmental Science
- 2005
Examination of local-scale relationships between native and exotic plant taxa in bunchgrass communities of western Montana, USA found that measures of biotic resistance, or the ability of communities to resist invasions, are weak.

In experimental communities of sessile marine invertebrates, increased species richness significantly decreased invasion success, apparently because species-rich communities more completely and efficiently used available space, the limiting resource in this system.

Experimental reductions in grassland plant richness increase ecosystem vulnerability to invasions by plant species, enhance the spread of plant fungal diseases, and alter the richness and structure of insect communities, suggesting that the loss of basal species may have profound effects on the integrity and functioning of ecosystems.

Overall invasion success was negatively related to resident functional group richness, but there was only weak evidence that resident species repelled functionally similar invaders and other factors seem to have been more important to community in- vasibility.
