A legendary and very valuable medicinal fungus first known in China 2000 years ago is recognized in this study as a new species. The sanghuang mushroom (桑黃, sanghuang) is a popular medicinal polypore used throughout China, Japan, and Korea. While its medicinal properties were recognized in an early Tang Dynasty herbal written in the 7 century, modern scientific research has only recently confirmed its highly effective antitumor properties. Although Japanese and Korean mycologists have adopted… Expand

Species identity of Phellinus linteus (sanghuang) extensively used as a medicinal mushroom in Korea
TLDR
A phylogenetic analysis of 74 strains belonging to the P. linteus-baumii complex based on ITS nrDNA sequences found that parental stains of sanghuang varieties formally registered in the Korea Seed & Variety Service were grouped with SanghUangporus sanghoang instead of P.Linteus in the inferred phylogeny. Expand
Addressing widespread misidentifications of traditional medicinal mushrooms in Sanghuangporus (Basidiomycota) through ITS barcoding and designation of reference sequences
TLDR
This work separates the newly described Sanghuangporus subbaumii from S. baumii and treats S. toxicodendri as a later synonym of S. quercicola, and provides a practical method for ITS barcoding-based species identification of Sanghiungporus and will promote medicinal studies and commercial development from taxonomically correct material. Mycosphere Essays 1: Taxonomic Confusion in the Ganoderma lucidum Species Complex
TLDR
A phylogeny for the G. lucidum complex based on multigene analysis with combined 5.8S-ITS rDNA, RPB1, and EF-1 alpha sequence data for 17 taxa of the complex is presented and the taxonomic standing of these species is briefly discussed. Expand
Resource diversity of Chinese macrofungi: edible, medicinal and poisonous species
TLDR
The most common medicinal functions possessed by Chinese macrofungi are antitumor or anticancer, followed by antioxidant and antimicrobial, and these species could be treated as “Gold Mushrooms”. Expand
The First Whole Genome Sequencing of Sanghuangporus sanghuang Provides Insights into Its Medicinal Application and Evolution
TLDR
The genome sequence of S. sanghuang provides insights into its medicinal application and evolution, and a comparative genomics analysis with S. baumii and S. vaninii indicates that species diversification within SanghUangporus may be driven by the translocation and translocation plus inversion of genome sequences, while the expansion and contraction of gene families may contribute to the host specificity of Sanghuangsporus species. Expand
ITS barcoding-based species identification for Sanghuangporus (Basidiomycota), a genus of medicinal mushrooms
“Sanghuang” is a kind of important medicinal mushrooms and taxonomically represented by members in the fungal genus Sanghuangporus. Species of Sanghuangporus referred to medicinal studies andExpand
Optimized production and safety evaluation of hispidin‐enriched Sanghuangporus sanghuang mycelia
TLDR
Based on the results obtained, the present study demonstrates that 3 mg/g hispidin‐enriched S. sanghuang mycelia has a very low order of toxicity, which supports its safety for human consumption. Expand
The Genome of the Medicinal Macrofungus Sanghuang Provides Insights Into the Synthesis of Diverse Secondary Metabolites
TLDR
Genomic analysis of this fungus provides insights into its diverse secondary metabolites, which would be beneficial for the investigation of the medical applications of these pharmacological compounds in the future. Expand
Systematics is crucial for the traditional Chinese medicinal studies and industry of macrofungi
TLDR
Systematics is crucial for unlocking the potential of macrofungi as valuable resources to be developed in the traditional Chinese medicinal studies and industry, and should continue to be of interest to not just fungal taxonomists but also biochemists, pharmacists and businessmen. Expand
Evaluation of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative activities of ethanol extracts from different varieties of Sanghuang species
TLDR
The results showed S. sanghuang to be the most efficacious SanghUang basidiocarp of the two varieties, rich in polyphenolic compounds, having antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and tumor suppressive ability, and indicating a possible use of this variety as dietary supplements or natural herbal medicine in the future. Molecular identification and genetic diversity of a traditional Chinese medicinal fungus 'Sanghuang'
TLDR
The results showed that there were distinct genetic divergences among P. linteus, P. baumii and P. igniarius, which formed three separate species cluster in the topology tree obviously with high bootstrap value. Expand
Brunneocorticium pyriforme, a new corticioid fungal genus and species belonging to the euagarics clade.
TLDR
B. pyriforme is proposed as a new species and placed in a new genus belonging to the euagarics clade of Homobasidiomycetes, allied to the agaricoid genera Marasmiellus, Campanella, etc. Expand
Phylogenetic Identification of Medicinal Sanghuang
TLDR
The phylogenetic analysis of these sequences with BLAST tools showed that Phellinus baumii(China),Phellinus linteus(North Ko-rea), phellinus Linteus (South Korea) were the same species and should be classified into Phellinebaumii, but P Hellinus ig-niarius was the different species. Expand
Proceedings towards a natural classification of the worldwide taxa Phellinus s.l. and Inonotus s.l., and phylogenetic relationships of allied genera.
TLDR
The phylogenetic trees were discussed in relation to morphological and anatomical features of the fruit bodies and the taxonomic status of Phellinidium and Pyrrhoderma remained uncertain. Expand
Mycelial culture of Phellinus linteus protects primary cultured rat hepatocytes against hepatotoxins.
TLDR
The results suggest that the ethyl acetate fraction of the mycelial culture of Phellinus linteus protects hepatocytes from H(2)O(2)- or galactosamine-induced injury by maintaining hepatic glutathione level and RNA synthesis as well. Expand
Phylogeny of Phellinus and related genera inferred from combined data of its and mitochondrial SSU rDNA sequences
TLDR
