Birds are bipedal animals with a center of gravity rostral to the insertion of the hindlimbs. This imposes special demands on keeping balance when moving on the ground. Recently, specializations in the lumbosacral region have been suggested to function as a sense organ of equilibrium which is involved in the control of walking. Morphological, electrophysiological, behavioral and embryological evidence for such a function is reviewed. Birds have two nearly independent kinds of locomotion and it…

- BiologybioRxiv

It is found that birds that perch tend to have more prominent transverse canals, suggesting that the LSO is useful for balance-intensive behaviors, and some key questions need to be asked to advance the understanding of this fascinating and mysterious part of the bird spinal cord.

This work uses conventional and synchrotron μCT scans to quantify the morphology of the vestibular system in squamates able to perform controlled aerial descent compared to species characterized by a terrestrial or climbing life style and shows clear differences among animals with different life-styles.

The engineering approach provides the first quantitative evidence for functional benefits of the LSO balance sense in birds and support notions of control modularity in birds, with preferential vestibular sense for head stability and gaze, and LSO for body balance control, respectively.
Head Stabilization in the Pigeon: Role of Vision to Correct for Translational and Rotational Disturbances

It is concluded that head stabilization in response to translations and rotations depends on different sensory feedback and that visual feedback plays only a limited role for head stabilization during standing.

Encoding properties of edge cells will help to better understand how lampreys and other basal vertebrates adapt their locomotor rhythms to different water flow patterns, perturbations, or other unexpected changes in their environments.

It is suggested that inclines of up to 40° should be provided for hens in three-dimensional housing systems, which are easily negotiated (without wing use) by chicks and adult fowl.
Chick spinal accessory lobes contain functional neurons expressing voltagegated sodium channels generating action potentials.
- BiologyBiomedical research

Results clearly indicate that functional neurons expressing fast inactivating and TTXsensitive VGSC which generate action potentials exist in the AL of the chick and further support the proposal that the chick ALs function as the sensory organ of equilibrium.
