The Zoological Society of Japan (ZSJ) was first established as the Tokyo Biological Society in 1878 by Edward Sylvester Morse, the first Professor of Zoology in Tokyo Imperial University, and Ryokichi Yatabe, the Professor of Botany. In 1885, the Society changed its name to the Zoological Society of Tokyo, and in 1923, it became the Zoological Society of Japan.
