The European Space Agency’s (ESA’s) 241Am radioisotope power systems (RPSs) research and development programme is ongoing. The chemical form of the americium oxide ‘fuel’ has yet to be decided. The fuel powder will need to be sintered. The size and shape of the oxide powder particles are expected to influence sintering. The current chemical flow-sheet creates lath-shaped AmO2.
