Sox9 plays a crucial role in chondrogenesis. It encodes an HMG-domain transcription factor that activates an enhancer in the gene for type II collagen (Col2a1), a principal cartilage matrix protein. We have characterized the temporal pattern of Sox9 RNA expression in micromass culture, a widely used in vitro model for the analysis of embryonic cartilage differentiation.
