Abstract Sources and losses of total suspended matter (seston) and organic carbon are identified and estimated for northern Chesapeake Bay. Suspended matter in the northernmost segment of the Chesapeake is dominated by a fluvial source with a significant contribution from shore erosion. About 23% of the total input of particulate material is lost from the northernmost section, but only 4% escapes downstream while 19% is organically oxidized within the area.
