Using gauge theory/gravity duality we study sound wave propagation in strongly coupled non-conformal gauge theory plasma. We compute the speed of sound and the bulk viscosity of View the MathML source supersymmetric SU(Nc) Yang–Mills plasma at a temperature much larger than the mass scale of the theory in the limit of large Nc and large 't Hooft coupling. The speed of sound is computed both from the equation of state and the hydrodynamic pole in the stress–energy tensor two-point correlation…

Transport properties of cascading gauge theories

Cascading gauge theories of Klebanov et al. provide a model within a framework of gauge theory/string theory duality for a four-dimensional nonconformal gauge theory with a spontaneously generated

Thermal spectral functions of strongly coupled N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory.

We use the gauge-gravity duality conjecture to compute spectral functions of the stress-energy tensor in finite-temperature N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in the limit of large N(c) and large

Sound waves in (2+1) dimensional holographic magnetic fluids

We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to study propagation of sound waves in strongly coupled (2+1) dimensional conformal magnetic fluids. Our computation provides a nontrivial consistency check of the

Bulk viscosity of strongly coupled plasmas with holographic duals

We explain a method for computing the bulk viscosity of strongly coupled thermal plasmas dual to supergravity backgrounds supported by one scalar field. Whereas earlier investigations required the

Transport coefficients of strongly coupled gauge theories: Insights from string theory

Abstract. The transport properties of certain strongly coupled thermal gauge theories can be determined from their effective description in terms of gravity or superstring theory duals. Here we

A novel technique is used to compute the bulk viscosity of high temperature holographic gauge theory plasmas with softly broken conformal symmetry. Working in a black hole background which

Shear viscosity of strongly coupled N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma.

Using the anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory correspondence, the shear viscosity eta of the finite-temperature N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is related with the absorption cross section of low-energy gravitons by a near-extremal black three-brane and it is shown that in the limit of zero frequency this cross section coincides with the area of the horizon.

Sound of M theory

We consider sound propagation on M5- and M2-branes in the hydrodynamic limit. In particular, we look at the low energy description of a stack of N M-branes at finite temperature. At low energy, the
