All of the following comments are preliminary and tentative, and represent "work in progress", or in some cases an attempt to stimulate such work by others. I have deliberately offered some quite speculative suggestions with the aim of stirring discussion and criticism. I begin with brief remarks concerning some of the "founding fathers" of physical chemistry, whose influence has been felt ever since the development of bioenergetics.
