It has recently been shown by Seidel [10] that many symplectic 4-manifolds admit symplectic automorphisms which are differentiably isotopic to the identity but which cannot be deformed to the identity through symplectomorphisms. Seidel detected this phenomenon using the Floer homology groups that are associated to pairs of Lagrangian surfaces.
