There are many factors concerned in the production of a bleeding diathesis following extracorporeal circulation with hypothermia. Two major factors are unneutralized heparin and the utilization of clotting factors and platelets induced by hypercoagulability of the blood during cardiac by-pass; fibrinolysis or the development of a circulating anticoagulant are occasional complications.
