This is a summary of two lectures I gave at the Davis Conference on Cosmic Inflation. I explain why the quantum theory of de Sitter (dS) space should have a finite number of states and explore gross aspects of the hypothetical quantum theory, which can be gleaned from semiclassical considerations. The constraints of a self-consistent measurement theory in such a finite system imply that certain mathematical features of the theory are unmeasurable, and that the theory is consequently…

Some Thoughts on the Quantum Theory of Stable de Sitter Space

I review and update ideas about the quantum theory of de Sitter space. New results include a quantum relation between energy and entropy of states in the causal patch, which is satisfied by small dS

More Thoughts on the Quantum Theory of Stable de Sitter Space

I review and update ideas about the quantum theory of de Sitter space. New results include a quantum relation between energy and entropy of states in the causal patch, which is satisfied by small dS

de Sitter holography with a finite number of states

We investigate the possibility that, in a combined theory of quantum mechanics and gravity, de Sitter space is described by finitely many states. The notion of observer complementarity, which states

Finite features of quantum de Sitter space

We consider degrees of freedom for a quantum de Sitter spacetime. The problem is studied from both a Lorentzian and a Euclidean perspective. From a Lorentzian perspective, we compute dynamical

Aspects of quantum gravity in de Sitter spaces

In this paper we give a review of recent attempts to understand quantum gravity on de Sitter spaces. In particular, we discuss the holographic correspondence between de Sitter gravity and conformal

No-bang quantum state of the cosmos

A quantum state of the entire cosmos (universe or multiverse) is proposed which is the equal mixture of the Giddings–Marolf states that are asymptotically single de Sitter spacetimes in both past and

Infinite Temperature's Not So Hot

It has been argued that the entanglement spectrum of a static patch of de Sitter space must be flat, or what is equivalent, the temperature parameter in the Boltzmann distribution must be infinite.

Holographic Theories of Inflation and Fluctuations

The theory of holographic space-time (HST) generalizes both string theory and quantum field theory. It provides a geometric rationale for supersymmetry (SUSY) and a formalism in which super-Poincare

One conjecture and two observations on de Sitter space

We propose that the state represented by the Nariai black hole inside de Sitter space is the ground state of the de Sitter gravity, while the pure de Sitter space is the maximal energy state. With

TIME DEPENDENT HOLOGRAPHY

One of the most important results emerging from string theory is the gauge gravity duality (AdS/CFT correspondence) which tells us that certain problems in particular gravitational backgrounds can be

M theory observables for cosmological space-times

We discuss the construction of the analog of an S-matrix for space-times that begin with a Big-Bang and asymptote to an FRW universe with nonnegative cosmological constant. When the cosmological

M-theory observables for cosmological space-times

: We discuss the construction of the analog of an S-matrix for space-times that begin with a Big-Bang and asymptote to an FRW universe with nonnegative cosmological constant. When the cosmological

De Sitter vacua in string theory

We outline the construction of metastable de Sitter vacua of type IIB string theory. Our starting point is highly warped IIB compactifications with nontrivial NS and RR three-form fluxes. By

The dS/CFT correspondence

A holographic duality is proposed relating quantum gravity on dSD (D-dimensional de Sitter space) to conformal field theory on a single SD−1 ((D-1)-sphere), in which bulk de Sitter correlators with

de Sitter black holes with either of the two horizons as a boundary

The action and the thermodynamics of a rotating black hole in the presence of a positive cosmological constant are analyzed. Since there is no spatial infinity, one must bring in, instead, a platform

Matrix model for de Sitter

Based on a heuristic boost argument, we propose that the 4 dimensional de Sitter space can be described by a spherical Chern-Simons matrix model near the cosmological horizon, or models generalizing

Cosmological Event Horizons, Thermodynamics, and Particle Creation

It is shown that the close connection between event horizons and thermodynamics which has been found in the case of black holes can be extended to cosmological models with a repulsive cosmological

Breaking SUSY on the Horizon

I present a heuristic calculation of the critical exponent relating the gravitino mass to the cosmological constant in a de Sitter universe. The ingredients for the calculation are the area law for

Disturbing Implications of a Cosmological Constant

In this paper we consider the implications of a cosmological constant for the evolution of the universe, under a set of assumptions motivated by the holographic and horizon complementarity
