T HE HYPOTHESIS of a Penutian genetic relationship has had three stages of development. Dixon and Kroeber elated certain ative languages of California;1 Sapir added a number of other Pacific Coast languages;2 Freeland, Sapir, Whorf, Swadesh, and others have extended the concept to include various native languages of Latin America.'
