This study sought to identify existing and desired somatotypes among eating disorder patients and controls based on the somatotype theoretical model, using a novel three-dimensional (3D) scanning approach. Sixty-three female adult volunteers comprising 31 eating disorder patients and 32 controls underwent digital photography and 3D body scanning as part of a larger body image study. Participants' existing somatotype was evaluated from the 3D scans. Each individual interacted with her 2D image…

Relationship between body image and somatotype profile in young women

This study aimed to investigate associations among body dissatisfaction, behaviors, feelings, and beliefs related to the body - and somatotypical profile. The sample included 142 undergraduate female

What does it mean to have distorted body image in anorexia nervosa

This thesis explores body image distortion in anorexia nervosa spectrum disorders (ANSD), using 3D computer generated (CGI) stimuli together with psychophysical and behavioural methods. Experiments

Development and validation of the body shape scale (BOSHAS) for assessing body shape perception in African populations

The BOSHAS is the first sex-specific scale of real African models photographed in face and profile, including large body shape variability, and shows good validity and reliability for evaluating body shape perceptions and dissatisfaction of Africans.

Body Image for Athletes

The concept of body image includes how we perceive, think, feel and ultimately behave due to our own conception of our physical image. Body image dissatisfaction is when there is a difference between

Annotation. Research on the relationship of the human body with its psychological characteristics and behavioral elements is currently of great value for integrative medicine, psychology and

Effect of Combined Training on Body Image in Women with Breast Cancer: Controlled Clinical Trial

Background: Improvement in body image in women with breast cancer may be linked to altered functional capacity, regardless of body composition. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of

Body Image Software Programs: A Comprehensive Literature Review*

Heterogeneity was prevalent among the studies reviewed and prevented a favorable conclusion regarding the use of software compared to other body image assessment strategies.

Best Practice Protocols for Physique Assessment in Sport

Kinanthropometry can be useful in youth sports for talent development and improving sports performance. We consider the relationship between structure (as measured by anthropometry), physiology,

Body image, shape, and volumetric assessments using 3D whole body laser scanning and 2D digital photography in females with a diagnosed eating disorder: preliminary novel findings.

3D-volume:2D-area relationships showed that anorexia cases had least tissue on the torso and most on the arms and legs relative to frontal area, and these novel data could inform the design of clinical trials in adjunctive treatments for eating disorders.

Somatotyping using 3D anthropometry: a cluster analysis

An objective shape quantification procedure combining 3D scanning and cluster analysis yielded shape clusters strikingly similar to traditional somatotyping.

A computer-graphic technique for the study of body size perception and body types

A novel approach for measuring body size estimation in normal and eating-disordered women and men using clinical categories of body types as prototypes to understand how different attributes of his or her body shape contribute to perception of body size.

The influence of body fat content and bone diameter measurements on body dissatisfaction in adult women.

Investigation of the simultaneous influence of various anthropometric factors on body dissatisfaction in adult women found that hip diameter was a more salient factor in the determination of body dissatisfaction than the more general estimate of frame size.

Changes in body composition and fat distribution after short-term weight gain in patients with anorexia nervosa.

Although fat was the largest component of the weight gained, there was no preferential fat deposition in any one area and the female gynoid body shape was maintained, with body fat being the component that increased the most.

Dietary restraint, body dissatisfaction, and psychological distress: a prospective analysis.

Results cast doubt on the proposition that restrained eating is a primary cause of bulimic symptoms, emotional eating, and psychological distress seen in individuals who are trying to control their weight, and suggest that body dissatisfaction is the key factor.

Adolescent Boys and Body Image: Weight and Muscularity Concerns as Dual Pathways to Body Dissatisfaction

This research evaluated a dual pathway model for body dissatisfaction among adolescent boys. The study provides empirical support for the importance of distinguishing between weight and muscularity

Three-dimensional anthropometric analysis: Differences between elite Australian rowers and the general population

The greatest differences between elite rowers and the general population were seen in dimensions that could not be captured without 3D scanning, such as segmental volumes and cross-sectional areas.
