The aim of metabolite profiling is to monitor all metabolites within a biological sample for applications in basic biochemical research as well as pharmacokinetic studies and biomarker discovery. Here, novel data analysis software, XCMS, was used to monitor all metabolite features detected from an array of serum extraction methods, with application to metabolite profiling using electrospray liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (ESI-LC/MS). The XCMS software enabled the comparison of methods…

Extraction parameters for metabolomics from cell extracts
TLDR
The temperature considered during the extraction or the presence of formic acid, a commonly used additive, was shown to have minimal effects on the measured ion intensities of metabolites while washing of samples before metabolite extraction exhibited dramatic effects on measured intensities.
A mass spectrometric study for comparative analysis and evaluation of metabolite recovery from plasma by various solvent systems.
TLDR
Seven solvent systems for extraction of metabolites from plasma were compared and the acetone/isopropanol system was found to be superior in extraction of various classes of metabolites, especially organic acids, nucleosides and nucleoside derivatives, and heterocyclic molecules.
Metabonomic profiling of liver metabolites by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and its application to characterizing hyperlipidemia.
TLDR
The results suggest that liver metabonomics is a valuable technique and that the combined analysis of systematic biofluids and local tissues is meaningful and complementary, recovering more comprehensive metabonomic data than either analysis alone.
Global metabolic profiling procedures for urine using UPLC–MS
TLDR
The use of UPLC–MS for metabolic profiling in this way is not faster than the conventional HPLC-based methods but, because of improved chromatographic performance, provides superior metabolome coverage.
Procedures for large-scale metabolic profiling of serum and plasma using gas chromatography and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry
TLDR
The experimental workflow for long-term and large-scale metabolomic studies involving thousands of human samples with data acquired for multiple analytical batches over many months and years is described.
Mass spectrometry-based metabolomics, analysis of metabolite-protein interactions, and imaging.
TLDR
Mass spectrometry-based analysis of metabolite abundance, protein-metabolite interactions, and spatial distribution of compounds facilitates the high-throughput screening of biochemical reactions, the reconstruction of metabolic networks, biomarker discovery, determination of tissue compositions, and functional annotation of both proteins and metabolites.
Concurrent profiling of polar metabolites and lipids in human plasma using HILIC-FTMS
TLDR
Heavy smokers could be successfully distinguished from non smokers by univariate and multivariate statistical analysis of the profiling data, and 62 biomarkers for cigarette smoke were found, indicating that the concurrent analysis approach could be potentially used for clinical biomarker discovery, metabolite-based diagnosis, etc.
A sample extraction and chromatographic strategy for increasing LC/MS detection coverage of the erythrocyte metabolome.
