An image technique (due to Sommerfeld) that is appropriate for finding the potential of an electrical charge near a conducting semi-infinite sheet is reviewed. The technique is extended to a conducting disk by a coordinate transformation. The forces on a charge near a conducting semi-infinite sheet and near a conducting disk are found. In this case, the potential is required to vanish on the surface of the conductors. By requiring the normal derivative to vanish, the forces on a magnetic…
Solution of potential problems near the corner of a conductor
The Green’s function for a space defined (in cylindrical coordinates) by the intersection of two half‐planes S1 (φ=0) and S2 (φ=ϑ where 0 < ϑ ⩽ 2π) is found by a technique due to Sommerfeld. The
The conducting ring viewed as a wormhole
We compute the exterior Green function for a grounded equi-potential circular ring in two-dimensional electrostatics by treating the system geometrically as a "squashed wormhole" with an image charge
Meissner state properties of a superconducting disk in a non-uniform magnetic field
We describe a formalism for studying a superconducting disk shielding an arbitrary magnetic field. The theory is developed for problems with rotational symmetry, and the results are applied to

We compute the exterior Green function for a grounded equi-potential circular ring in two-dimensional electrostatics by treating the system geometrically as a “squashed wormhole” with an image charge
Stability of magnets levitated above superconductors
The stability of a permanent magnet levitated above a slab of hard superconductor is considered. The force on a dipole magnet over a perfectly diamagnetic disk is calculated. It is found that the
SOMMERFELD'S IMAGE METHOD IN THE CALCULATION OF VAN DER WAALS FORCES
We show how the image method can be used together with a recent method developed by C. Eberlein and R. Zietal to obtain the dispersive van der Waals interaction between an atom and a perfectly
Green Functions, Sommerfeld Images, and Wormholes
Electrostatic Green functions for grounded equipotential circular and elliptical rings, and grounded hyperspheres in n-dimension electrostatics, are constructed using Sommerfeld’s method. These

Image Charges Re-Imagined.
We discuss the grounded, equipotential ellipse in two-dimensional electrostatics to illustrate different ways of extending the domain of the potential and placing image charges such that homogeneous
