Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is rapidly emerging as a successful and important technique for protein and peptide structural elucidation from samples in anisotropic environments. Because of the diversity of nuclei and nuclear spin interactions that can be observed, and because of the broad range of sample conditions that can be studied by solid-state NMR, the potential for gaining structural constraints is great. Structural constraints in the form of orientational, distance, and…

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) of Proteins: Solid State
TLDR
Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy has elucidated, amongst other things, the structures of ion channels and their interactions with antiviral drugs and toxins and the molecular architectures of amyloid fibrils associated with Alzheimer's disease and type II diabetes.
Solid-state NMR spectroscopic methods in chemistry.
TLDR
This Review outlines some of the developments of solid-state NMR spectroscopy, including techniques such as cross-polarization, magic-angle spinning, multiple-pulse sequences, homo- and heteronuclear decoupling and recoupling techniques,multiple-quantum spectroscology, and dynamic angle spinning, as well as their applications to structure determination.

Combination of NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography offers unique advantages for elucidation of the structural basis of protein complex assembly
TLDR
NMR spectroscopy, in addition to answering many unique structural biology questions that can be addressed specifically by that technique, can be exceedingly powerful in modern structural biology when combined with other techniques including X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy.
Solid-state 2H NMR spectroscopy of retinal proteins in aligned membranes.
Solid state 19F-NMR of biomembranes
TLDR
This work has shown that NMR-reporters incorporated into the protein backbone or side chains, to reveal local structural parameters and to describe the dynamic properties of the membrane-embedded molecule, can be used as selective isotope labels for structure determination.
Structural and Dynamics Studies of Lipids by Solid-State NMR
TLDR
An overview of the solid-state NMR techniques commonly used to investigate the structure and dynamics of lipid bilayers is presented.

Macromolecular structural elucidation with solid-state NMR-derived orientational constraints
TLDR
Through this complete structure determination of a polypeptide in a lipid bilayer environment, solid-state NMR is demonstrated as an approach for determining three-dimensional macromolecular structure.
A method for the analytic determination of polypeptide structure using solid state nuclear magnetic resonance: The ‘‘metric method’’
A method, the metric method, is presented for determining the structure of polypeptides using solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) dipolar interactions. In analogy to the method of distance
Protein structure by solid-state NMR
The relative orientations (phi, Psi angles) of adjacent peptide bond planes define the secondary and tertiary structure of peptides and proteins. These orientations can be determined solely on the

TLDR
These results demonstrate that solid-state NMR experiments can overcome the correlation time problem and extend the range of proteins that can have their structures determined by NMR spectroscopy to include uniformly 15N-labeled membrane proteins in phospholipid bilayers.
