We used HARPS to measure oscillations in the low-mass star τ Cet. Although the data were compromised by instrumental noise, we have been able to extract the main features of the oscillations. We found τ Cet to oscillate with an amplitude that is about half that of the Sun, and with a mode lifetime that is slightly shorter than solar. The large frequency separation is 169 μHz, and we have identified modes with degrees 0, 1, 2, and 3. We used the frequencies to estimate the mean density of the…

The frequency of maximum oscillation power measured in dwarfs and giants exhibiting solar-like pulsations provides a precise, and potentially accurate, inference of the stellar surface gravity. An
Amplitudes of solar-like oscillations: a new scaling relation
• Physics

Solar-like oscillations are excited by near-surface convection and are being observed in growing numbers of stars using ground- and space-based telescopes. We have previously suggested an empirical
FIRST DETECTION OF THERMAL RADIO EMISSION FROM SOLAR-TYPE STARS WITH THE KARL G. JANSKY VERY LARGE ARRAY

Since the early days of helioseismology, adiabatic models have shown their limits for a precise fitting of individual oscillation frequencies. This discrepancy, which also exists for solar-type
Mode lifetimes of stellar oscillations - Implications for asteroseismology
• Physics, Geology

Context. Successful inference from asteroseismology relies on at least two factors: that the oscillations in the stars have amplitudes large enough to be clearly observable, and that the oscillations
Signals embedded in the radial velocity noise - Periodic variations in the τ Ceti velocities
• Geology, Physics

Context. The abilities of radial velocity exoplanet surveys to detect the lowest-mass extra-solar planets are currently limited by a combination of instrument precision, lack of data, and 'jitter'.
