Synthetic Hydroxyapatite (HAp) has been shown to be one of a select few materials which are both biocompatible and bioactive. HAp has an elastic moduli higher than that of cortical bone, however, due to unpredictable fatigue properties and design limitations, porous HAp cannot be used in a bulk form as a load bearing implant.
