Soil structure is defined as the arrangement of soil particles and the pore space between them (Marshall, 1962) and can be defined in terms of pore size distribution, pore continuity and tortuosity (Lawrence, 1977). Pore size distribution determines the soil’s capacity to transmit water (Lal, 1991) and affects the intensity of phenomena (interception, mass flow and diffusion) by which plants acquire nutrients (Greenland, 1979; Amézquita, 1994).
