The inner membrane of the nuclear envelope (NE) was previously shown to contain a Na/Ca exchanger (NCX) tightly linked to GM1 ganglioside that mediates transfer of nucleoplasmic Ca(2+) to the NE lumen and constitutes a cytoprotective mechanism.
