This chapter analyzes the social and demographic characteristics of the rural population living away from Calcutta India using data from the 1980-1982 fertility survey. The high percentage of female children aged below 15 years among scheduled caste Hindus and Muslims in region 2 is a reflection of higher maternal mortality in that region.
