The aim of this paper is twofold: (a) to show that Smart's reply1 to my earlier note 'J. J. C. Smart, Materialism and Occam's Razor'2 is unsatisfactory; and (b) to show that in any case materialism could not give a satisfactory account of the believing of anything at all.
