A plot of the reciprocal slope efficiency versus cavity length is shown to significantly deviate from a straight line in semiconductor quantum dot lasers thus strongly limiting the practicality of the standard procedure of measuring the internal loss and quantum efficiency. The internal absorption loss coefficient αint and quantum efficiency int η (efficiency of stimulated recombination) are important parameters in semiconductor lasers.
