  • When a cylindrical structure with helical reinforcing is bent, the reinforcing tends to slide with respect to the inscribed cylinder. Unbonded flexible pipe is an example of such a structure. As a result of an applied curvature, slippage of the layers of helices occurs, leading to the wear and ultimately to fatigue of the reinforcing.
