In Escherichia coli, a four-gene operon, sbm-ygfD-ygfG-ygfH, has been shown to encode a putative cobalamin-dependent pathway with the ability to produce propionate from succinate in vitro [Haller T, Buckel T, Retey J, Gerlt JA.
