Skin mites of the European bison from Poland were studied. They belonged to 6 species of 3 families: Demodecidae (Demodex bisonianus, D. bovis, and Demodex sp.), Psoroptidae (Psoroptes equi and Chorioptes bovis), and Sarcoptidae (Sarcoptes scabiei). Among them, D. bisonianus and Ch. bovis were the most frequent and abundant, as they were collected from almost half of the bison examined (total: about 250 individuals). The remaining species were much rarer. All studied parasites were strongly… Expand

Tables from this paper

Diversity of three species of the genus Demodex (Acari, Demodecidae) parasitizing dogs in Poland
TLDR
The occurrence of hair follicle mites (Acari, Demodecidae) was investigated in dogs from Gdansk Pomerania, Poland and the differentiation in structure, biology, and microhabitats of these mites may be associated with the occurrence in dogs of forms of demodecosis with different symptoms and courses. Expand
The Biodiversity of Demodecid Mites (Acariformes: Prostigmata), Specific Parasites of Mammals with a Global Checklist and a New Finding for Demodex sciurinus
TLDR
The present paper lists all formally-described valid species of demodecid mites, together with other functioning specific names, verified and with comments on their status, significant for correct species identification and demodemodecosis diagnostics. Expand
The parasitic fauna of the European bison (Bison bonasus) (Linnaeus, 1758) and their impact on the conservation. Part 2 The structure and changes over time
TLDR
In light of the changes to parasite species richness during the last decades, special emphasis shall be given to new parasite species reported in European bison, their pathogenicity and potential implications for conservation. Expand
Demodex sp. (Acari, Demodecidae) and demodecosis in dogs: characteristics, symptoms, occurrence.
TLDR
Three species of hair follicle mite specific to dogs not only differed morphologically but were also found on different areas of the hosts’ skin, suggesting the differentiation in structure, biology, and microhabitats of these mites may be associated with the occurrence of forms of demodecosis with different symptoms and courses in dogs. Expand
The parasitic fauna of the European bison (Bison bonasus) (Linnaeus, 1758) and their impact on the conservation. Part 1 The summarising list of parasites noted
TLDR
During the current century, 88 species of parasites have been recorded in Bison bonasus, many typical for cattle and many newly acquired from Cervidae. Expand
Selected aspects of adaptations to the parasitism of hair follicle mites (Acari: Demodecidae) from hoofed mammals
The Demodecidae are one of the most specialized parasitic arthropods of mammals, so far recorded in representatives of thirteen mammalian order, therein 16 species were described from hoofed mammals.Expand
Diversity of the parasite fauna of Mus musculus L. (Rodentia, Muridae) from different habitats
TLDR
The species composition of a parasitic fauna in a host is a net result of specificity of individual parr asitic species with respect to the host concerned and an array of complex interactions involved in the paraa site's functioning in the external environment. Expand
Integrated Bayesian species delimitation and morphological diagnostics of chorioptic mange mites (Acariformes: Psoroptidae: Chorioptes)
The external morphology of adult and immature stages of mange mites of the genus Chorioptes was investigated with the aid of light and scanning electron microscopy. A molecular phylogeny of thisExpand
Interactions among the entomopathogenic fungus, Beauveria bassiana (Ascomycota: Hypocreales), the parasitoid, Aphidius matricariae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), and its host, Myzus persicae (Homoptera: Aphididae)
Abstract The effect of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana on the biological characteristics and life table of Aphidius matricariae , a parasitoid of the green peach aphid, Myzus persicaeExpand
Conservation implications of parasite co-reintroduction.

TLDR
Although historically little thought was given to whether or not a parasite is native in a host reintroduction release area, recent reintroduction management offers a more nuanced approach, allowing for parasite co-reintroduction given reasonable risks to the host population and the wider ecosystem.
