THE independent discovery and correction of astigmatism by George Biddell Airy (1), was described in a paper read before the Cambridge Philosophical Society, on 21 February 1825, and subsequently printed in the Transactions of that Society (2). The term ‘astigmatism’ was at a later time suggested to Airy (3), to describe the anomaly, by Dr William Whewell (1794-1866; F.R.S., 1820), Master of Trinity College, Cambridge. While still a student at Trinity College, Cambridge, Airy had noticed that…

A review of astigmatism and its possible genesis
TLDR
An overview of research that has been carried out examining various aspects of this refractive error is presented andories of the development of astigmatism based on genetics, extraocular muscle tension, visual feedback and eyelid pressure are considered.
A Review of Astigmatism - A Refractive Error correctable by Cylindrical glasses
TLDR
No single model or theory of the development ofAstigmatism has been proven conclusively, however, recent advances in technology such as wavefront sensors and videokeratoscopes have led to an increased understanding of ocular astigmatism.
Charles François Sturm’s Writings on Optics
Sturm’s writings on geometrical optics consist of only four papers in all, their publication evenly spread over the span of his career. The first two, published in 1824 and 1826, discuss the theory
Astigmatism among children in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia: prevalence and associated factors
TLDR
Astigmatism is highly prevalent among children in Western Saudi Arabia, with the majority being undiagnosed before this screening campaign, and the findings urge for further nationwide, population-based studies to address the burden of refractive errors amongChildren in Saudi Arabia.
