We confine $4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{8}$ fermionic ${}^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ atoms simultaneously with $9\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{9}$ bosonic ${}^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ atoms in a magneto-optical trap based on an all-semiconductor laser system. We optimize the two-isotope sample for sympathetic evaporative cooling. This is an essential step towards the production of a quantum-degenerate gas of fermionic lithium atoms.

Tables from this paper

Simultaneous magneto-optical trapping of three atomic species

We report on the simultaneous trapping of two fermionic species, $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ and $^{40}\mathrm{K}$, and a bosonic species, $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$, demonstrating the first three-species

Simultaneous sub-Doppler laser cooling of fermionic Li 6 and K 40 on the D 1 line: Theory and experiment

We report on simultaneous sub-Doppler laser cooling of fermionic $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ and $^{40}\mathrm{K}$ using the ${D}_{1}$ optical transitions. We compare experimental results to a numerical

Trap loss in a metastable helium-rubidium magneto-optical trap

We present results of the study of a simultaneously confined metastable helium (He*) and rubidium magneto-optical trap (MOT). By monitoring the trap decay of the {sup 87}Rb MOT with and without a He*

All-optical production of a superfluid Bose-Fermi mixture of $^6$Li and $^7$Li

We report the first all-optical production of a superfluid Bose-Fermi mixture with two spin states of Li (fermion) and one spin state of Li (boson) under the resonant magnetic field of the s-wave

Mixtures of ultracold gases: Fermi sea and Bose-Einstein condensate of lithium isotopes

This thesis presents studies of quantum degenerate atomic gases of fermionic $^6$Li and bosonic $^7$Li. Degeneracy is reached by evaporative cooling of $^7$Li in a strongly confining magnetic trap.

Large atom number dual-species magneto-optical trap for fermionic 6Li and 40K atoms

Abstract We present the design, implementation and characterization of a dual-species magneto-optical trap (MOT) for fermionic 6Li and 40K atoms with large atom numbers. The MOT simultaneously

Laser cooling and trapping of Yb from a thermal source

Abstract. We have successfully loaded a magneto-optic trap for Yb atoms from a thermal source without the use of a Zeeman slower. The source is placed close to the trapping region so that it provides

Trapping fermionic and bosonic helium atoms

This thesis presents experimental and theoretical work performed at the Laser Centre of the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam to study laser-cooled metastable triplet helium atoms. Samples containing

Laser cooling at resonance

We show experimentally that 3-D laser cooling of lithium atoms is achieved when the laser light is tuned exactly to resonance with the atomic transition. For a theoretical description of this

Compact laser cooling apparatus for simultaneous cooling of lithium and rubidium

We report on a dual species laser cooling apparatus capable of collecting over 108 87Rb or 85Rb atoms from an atomic vapor or up to (8±2)×107 6Li atoms directly into a magneto-optic trap (MOT) from
