In the present paper, an aerodynamic investigation of a high-speed train is performed. In the first section of this article, a generic high-speed train against a turbulent flow is simulated, numerically. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations combined with the SST turbulence model are applied to solve incompressible turbulent flow around a high-speed train. Flow structure, velocity and pressure contours and streamlines at some typical wind directions are the most important results…

Numerical investigation on the aerodynamic characteristics of high-speed train under turbulent crosswind

Increasing velocity combined with decreasing mass of modern high-speed trains poses a question about the influence of strong crosswinds on its aerodynamics. Strong crosswinds may affect the running

Numerical Computation of 3—D Turbulent Flow Around High—Speed Trains Under Side Wind Conditions

This paper describes the numerical investigations carried out by LSTM within the TRANSAERO project [1] to estimate side wind effects on a typical high-speed train. Air flow around a detailed geometry

High-Speed Train Crosswind Analysis: CFD Study and Validation with Wind-Tunnel Tests

The correct definition of the crosswind aerodynamic forces on a high speed train is important to judge the safety of the rolling stock. Different conditions in terms of scenario (DTBR, EMBK and

Comparison of RANS and Detached Eddy Simulation Results to Wind-Tunnel Data for the Surface Pressures Upon a Class 43 High-Speed Train

This work investigates the consistency of two of these methodologies; the wind-tunnel and the CFD by comparing the measured surface pressure with the computed CFD values, and shows that the DES based approaches was best able to replicate the Windtunnel results within the margin of uncertainty.

Unsteady simulation for a high-speed train entering a tunnel

In order to study the unsteady aerodynamics effects in railway tunnels, the 3D Reynolds average Navier-Stokes equations of a viscous compressible fluid are solved, and the two-equation k-ɛ model is

Numerical Analysis for Aerodynamics of High-Speed Trains Passing Tunnels

High-speed trains running at 200~350km/h will be operated on Chinese high-speed railways after 2010. Some of the high-speed railways in China will be built in mountainous areas. Many tunnels have to

Aerodynamic Numerical Simulation for EMU Passing Each Other in Tunnel

Transient pressure variation generated by two trains passing through a tunnel has great influence on train safety and passenger comfort. Therefore, research on this area is particularly important.

A Comparison of the Numerical Simulation and Experimental Investigation of the Flow Around a High Speed Train

Numerical simulations of the turbulent flow surrounding a high speed train are carried out at SNCF (French Railways) using the commercial code Star CD. The numerical methodology developed consists in
