We present a novel method for the simulation of the interior of large cosmic voids, suitable for the study of the formation and evolution of objects lying within such regions. Following Birkhoff's theorem, void regions dynamically evolve as universes with cosmological parameters that depend on the underdensity of the void. We derive the values of ΩM, ΩΛ, and H0 that describe this evolution. We examine how the growth rate of structure and scale factor in a void differ from the background…

Towards understanding the structure of voids in the cosmic web

Our goal is to see how density waves of different scale combine to form voids between galaxy systems of various scale. We perform numerical simulations of structure formation in cubes of size 100 and

Cosmology with underdensities of the Cosmic Web

This thesis explores the utilisation of underdense regions of the Cosmic Web as a tool for studying cosmology. Underdensities, known as cosmic voids, provide a complementary approach for

The void size function in dynamical dark energy cosmologies

We test a theoretical description of the void size distribution function against direct estimates from halo catalogues of the DEMNUni suite of large cosmological simulations. Besides standard ΛCDM,

Assembly of filamentary void galaxy configurations

We study the formation and evolution of filamentary configurations of dark matter haloes in voids. Our investigation uses the high-resolution Lambda cold dark matter simulation CosmoGrid to look for

The life and death of cosmic voids

We investigate the formation, growth, merger history, movement, and destruction of cosmic voids detected via the watershed transform code VIDE in a cosmological N-body dark matter {\Lambda}CDM

Merging tree algorithm of growing voids in self-similar and CDM models

Observational studies show that voids are prominent features of the large-scale structure of the present-day Universe. Even though their emerging from the primordial density perturbations and

Voids in the 2dFGRS and ΛCDM simulations: spatial and dynamical properties

We perform a statistical study on the distribution and dynamics of voids in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS). Our statistics are tested and calibrated using mock 2dFGRS catalogues. We analyse

On the importance of high-redshift intergalactic voids

We investigate the properties of 1D flux ‘voids’ (connected regions in the flux distribution above the mean-flux level) by comparing hydrodynamical simulations of large cosmological volumes with a

The evidence of absence: galaxy voids in the excursion set formalism

We present an analytical model for the sizes of voids in the galaxy distribution. Peebles and others have recently emphasized the possibility that the observed characteristics of voids may point to a

On the equivalence between the effective cosmology and excursion set treatments of environment

In studies of the environmental dependence of structure formation, the large-scale environment is often thought of as providing an effective background cosmology: for example the formation of
