A novel naphthalimide-based fluorescent sensor bearing the N,N'-bis(salicylidene)diethylenetriamine receptor was developed, which exhibited dual signaling behaviors for Cd(2+) and Cu(2+), and was applicable to the environmental and biological milieus.
