Mudstones constitute about 60% of the known sedimentary section (Potter et al., 1980), but papers dealing specifically with these sediments are rare. Muds contain few clues as to their origin and depositional history, so they are cursorily described and subsequently ignored, whereas the more unusual sand layers found interbedded with them are studied in detail.
