Summary The effect of soil inoculation with a selected strain of the silicate bacteria Bacillus circulans on the release of K and Si from difficult minerals was investigated. In a greenhouse experiment, six successive crops w^ere grown in either inoculated or uninoculated sand, alluvial clay and calcareous soils as well as in mixtures of sand plus biotite, orthoclase or fresh Nile sediment.
