Contrary to the conventional belief that humic coal generates primarily gas, 3 billion bbl of recoverable oil has been discovered in the humic coaly succession of the fluviodeltaic Latrobe Group (Upper Cretaceous-Tertiary) that serves as both the reservoir and the source for hydrocarbons in the offshore Gippsland basin of southeastern Australia.
